Easy Halloween Dessert: Worms in Mud Recipe
Enjoy a Ghoulishly Delicious Treat!
As any good zombie worth his or her salt will tell you, worms in mud makes for a tasty, easy Halloween dessert.
Lucky for you, though, you don't have to go into your backyard to serve up this recipe (no tricks!) The kind of "worms in mud" that humans enjoy is actually a concoction of gummy worms (or other gummy insects of your choice) served in chocolate pudding. It's a super simple dessert to make, which makes it perfect for Halloween night when you've got trick-or-treating to do (or candy to hand out).
Ingredients
- 3 grapefruit
- 1 package instant chocolate pudding
- Cold milk (for the pudding)
- 1 bag gummy worms
- 1 package chocolate sandwich cookies
- crushed (optional)
Instructions
- Cut each grapefruit in half with a sharp knife. If children are helping, make sure to supervise.
- Using a small knife, make a cut between the fruit and the rind of each grapefruit half, being careful not to poke any holes. Then, make several crosswise cuts. This will make the fruit easier to remove.
- Scrape the fruit out of the rind with a spoon. Save and use for fruit salad, if desired.
- Place the empty grapefruit halves on a tray that will fit in your refrigerator.
- Prepare the chocolate pudding according to the package directions.
- Divide pudding among the six grapefruit halves.
- Place the desired number of gummy worms into each serving.
- Sprinkle the tops with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies, if desired.
- Cool until pudding is set, then serve to your delighted ghouls and goblins!

Our family traditionally serves this dish in a scooped-out grapefruit, as the orangish color is perfect for the season. However, there are plenty of other ways to make this dish look as good as it tastes!
- Carved-out mini pumpkins. If you have time, purchase some small pie pumpkins to use as serving bowls. Best if you have helpers to scoop them out!
- Dessert bowls. Save even more time by using bowls to serve them in. No scooping required.
- Halloween-themed bowls. Hit up your local Halloween store or home goods store between August and October to find the perfect bowls to serve this tasty dessert.
